2020 has been a challenging year for many of us. For your volunteer fire department, this past year has been unprecedented in our agency’s history in many ways, but in other regards, it has been exactly the same as it ever was. In 2020, we responded each and every time help was needed– just as we have in every year in the half-century preceding. Today, we wear masks, disinfect our equipment after calls, and follow new health and safety procedures, but we still stand ready to serve our community. Fires, motor vehicle crashes, and other emergencies didn’t stop for COVID-19, and neither did we. Our members have taken the new demands and risks the pandemic has brought in stride. In spite of all that 2020 threw at us, our services have not been interrupted.
What has been interrupted, though, are our fundraisers. Every single one of our in-person fundraising events, including our famous auction and game supper, were cancelled this year to comply with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. This has meant a loss of approximately $15,000 of income to our department in 2020, and no one knows what 2021 will bring. This appeal represents our one and only fundraiser in 2020.
Be assured, our agency is going to get through this. Pawlet’s fire protection will not be compromised by financial challenges. We know many people in our community have lost jobs or had other financial hardships this year, and if that is you, we’ve got this. But this year more than ever, if you’re in a position to help us, we could use a hand.
